In this article I’ll share my personal experience of teaching English in a primary school in China. In other words I’ll share my method of teaching which is easy to follow and interesting for learners. So let’s begin.

“T” = Teacher and “S” = Student

Starting a class

It’s really simple to start a class.

T: Hello everyone, My Name is (your name), Say hello (your name).

S: hello (your Name).

T: Tell me How are you Today? Are you happy (make a happy Face) or Sad (make a sad face).

It’s a good idea to have ppt with a happy and sad face so its easy for students to follow.

Now go to students one by one and ask them and high five.

Warm-up song

After introduction and greetings now it’s time for a warm-up song. You can choose any song depending on which grade you are teaching.

Ask the students to stand up and sing and perform on the song.

Class Rules

If you are teaching a big class. It’s a good idea to have some class rules. Because it gives you more control to manage the class.

Here’s the list of Four most common rules that you can use.

  • Hands on your desk.
  • Eyes on (your name)
  • Who can try? I can try
  • Be quite.

Teaching keywords

First thing you have to do is to teach keywords. So here’s the best technique to teach keywords.

  • Show the keyword to students.

If the keyword is a verb. Do that action e.g. eat or run. If the keyword is noun e.g Animal you can also use sound e.g. cat , dog etc.

  • Now do the actions and ask the students to repeat the word after you. Read the word slowly. (5–9 times depending on the complexity of the word)
  • Show them the next picture (flash cards or ppt), and ask students “I will say one time, you will three times” say the word and let the student repeat that word three times. Do that for three times.
  • Now ask First group to stand up and do the same, teacher will say one time and students will repeat the word three times.
  • Last step is to ask student “who can try” and ask 5–6 students randomly, see if they can recall the word or not.

Use same technique to introduce 2nd 3rd word.

After the last keyword use ppt quiz to and call 5–6 random student to check if they have learned the words or not.

Teaching key sentence

Lets suppose our key sentence is “My Favourite colour is …”

  • First show the students word “my” Show them with the hands pointing towards yourself, and repeat it for few times.next bring the word “favourite” and repeat it few times. When you feel they have leaned the the both words. At that time brig both words together “ my favourite “ and repeat several time next bring the word “ colour” repeat it few times. And add it with “my favourite colour is…”.
  • After teaching them key sentence it time to see if they got all they word in sentence or not. So to check this using following ppt game. In which they have arrange the words to make sentence. ask random students to come and try.

After teaching keywords and key sentences give students class review.

Play a goodbye song.

And you done with the lesson. 😸
